Esophageal cancer is a type of cancer that occurs in the esophagus, the long, hollow tube that connects the throat to the stomach. The esophagus helps move food from the mouth to the stomach for digestion. This cancer can develop anywhere along the esophagus, but it most commonly forms in the lower portion.
Sometimes the cancer does not spread any further. This is called “in situ.” If the cancer spreads outside the breast, the cancer is called “invasive.” It may just spread to nearby tissues and lymph nodes. Or the cancer may metastasize (spread to other parts of the body) through the lymph system or the blood.
