What is Immunotherapy ?
Immunotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses the body’s own immune system to fight cancer. Think of it as giving your immune system special tools and training to better recognize and attack cancer cells. Here are some key types of immunotherapy

Cancer Vaccines: These vaccines help the immune system recognize and attack cancer cells. They can be used to prevent or treat cancer.
Cytokines: These are proteins that boost the immune system’s ability to fight cancer. Interleukin-2 (IL-2) is an example used in kidney cancer and melanoma.

Monoclonal Antibodies

These are lab-made molecules that can bind to specific targets on cancer cells. For example, rituximab targets the CD20 protein on B cells and is used to treat certain types of lymphoma.

Checkpoint Inhibitors: These drugs help the immune system recognize and attack cancer cells by blocking proteins that prevent immune cells from attacking. Pembrolizumab (Keytruda) is an example used in various cancers.

CAR-T Cell Therapy: This involves modifying a patient’s T cells (a type of immune cell) to better recognize and attack cancer cells. It’s like giving the immune cells a GPS to find cancer more effectively.

Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy can be given in different ways, such as through an IV, injection, or even as a pill. It’s often used in combination with other treatments like chemotherapy to enhance its effectiveness.
